One team has booked its place in the Nedbank Cup final, and it’s up to one of Chippa United or Kaizer Chiefs todo the same as they battle it out at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
The only lower league outfit to make it to the last four of this year’s competition, TS Galaxy lie in wait after springing a surprise on Lamontville Golden Arrows – equalising in the dying moments before netting twice in extra time – to secure a spot in the final that will be played at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, 18 May.
Attention now turns to the Windy City, where we could be in for another giant-killing feat as the Chilli Boys look to add Amakhosi to their list of big scalps, which they scaled to get to this stage of the tournament.
The hosts have been rank underdogs for two out of the three fixtures prior to the semis, but have punched above their weight – beating Mamelodi Sundowns in the first round, before stunning Bidvest Wits in the quarterfinals, with first-division outfit Milano United also falling victim in between the two giants.
For the Glamour Boys, their path to the semifinals has been almost the exact opposite of that experienced by their opponents in terms of level of competition.
The Soweto giants drew a mismatch in the first two rounds, but made hard work of beating third-tier outfits Tornado FC and The Magic, leaving it until late on both occasion to secure victory.
They had to wait until the last eight to pick on someone their own size, and they did so in convincing fashion – beating Cape Town City 2-0 at Mbombela Stadium to book a semifinal berth.
However, the last four of cup competition has proven to be their ceiling in recent years, but they will be looking to buck the trend against Chippa to take a huge leap towards ending a much-documented trophy drought.
